Mechanical dock levelers use a spring or counterweight system activated by a pull chain or lever — they are lower cost but require more physical effort to operate. Hydraulic dock levelers use a powered push-button system for effortless, precise positioning, making them ideal for high-frequency dock operations where speed, safety, and reduced operator fatigue are priorities.

A dock leveler bridges the gap between a fixed dock height and the truck bed, compensating for height variations. A dock lift (or vertical dock lift) is a full platform that raises and lowers freight between grade level and dock height. Dock levelers are used at standard raised loading docks, while dock lifts serve facilities without a raised dock structure.

Hydraulic dock levelers are available in capacities from 20,000 lbs to 80,000 lbs or more. The required capacity depends on the maximum load weight being transferred and the type of equipment used (forklift, pallet jack, etc.). Pit-style levelers are recessed into a concrete pit at the dock face and offer a wider range of height adjustment — ideal for new construction or major dock upgrades. Edge-of-dock levelers mount directly to the face of an existing dock and are a cost-effective solution for retrofit installations or facilities without pit infrastructure, though with a more limited height range.
